Fort Lauderdale has many waterfront restaurants, beaches, and great offshore fishing, but what else is there to do around Fort Lauderdale? Nestled amidst the urban energy lies a hidden gem – Whiskey Creek, a tranquil oasis offering a taste of old Florida charm, and it's only a stone’s throw away from the Intracoastal Waterway, just north of Port Everglades.
Whiskey Creek is a 3.8-mile scenic waterway located within Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. It winds its way between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, creating a calm and protected environment perfect for exploring by kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. You can also beach a small boat along the shore near the entrance, but it shallows up the further in you go. Going further in on Whiskey Creek is for paddleboards, kayaks, etc.
Lush mangrove forests line the banks, providing a habitat for diverse marine life, while the sandy shores offer a secluded spot for picnics or simply soaking up the Florida sunshine.
Whiskey Creek boasts a rich history that predates Fort Lauderdale's transformation into a yachting capital. In the past, the Tequesta Native Americans used the waterway for hunting, fishing, and navigating their canoes. During the Prohibition era, the creek's shallow waters and hidden coves became a haven for bootleggers smuggling rum between the Bahamas and the mainland US.
Today, Whiskey Creek offers a variety of recreational activities for visitors of all ages and interests. Here's a glimpse into what you can experience:
- Paddle Through Paradise: Rent a kayak or paddleboard from the park marina or Whiskey Creek Hideout and embark on a peaceful journey through the scenic waterway. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, manatees, and a variety of bird species.
- Cast a Line: Anglers of all skill levels can enjoy some laid-back fishing in the calm waters of the creek. Target species include snook, tarpon, and various bottom feeders.
- Explore the Underwater World: The nearby reefs on the ocean-side boast a vibrant marine ecosystem. Experienced snorkelers can explore the underwater wonders teeming with colorful fish, coral formations, and other marine life.
- Unwind on the Beach: The park offers a beautiful stretch of sandy beach, perfect for relaxing under the warm Florida sun. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean or build sandcastles with your friends and family.
Whiskey Creek is easily accessible and offers convenient amenities. The park features restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a concession stand. Additionally, Whiskey Creek Hideout provides kayak and paddleboard rentals and a small food concession stand.
You can get to Whiskey Creek by land or by boat! If you're going by boat, take the Intracoastal Waterway. The entrance to Whiskey Creek is just north of the Port Everglades Inlet. Keep a sharp eye out, as the entrance can be easily missed. Turn east at the entrance, go under the fixed bridge (watch your height), and you will see the shoreline along the creek. Most people simply beach their boats, get off, and walk to the shore or across the sand dunes towards the beach. Make sure to keep tabs on the tide, as your boat may get stuck if you beach it at high tide, or float away if you beach it at low tide. It is suggested that you set an anchor on the sandy shore to keep your boat from floating away in case you are not around.
Whether you're seeking a tranquil escape from the city buzz, a day of exploring nature, or a chance to delve into the region's rich history, Whiskey Creek offers a unique and unforgettable experience. So, pack your swimsuit, grab your sense of adventure, and head to this hidden gem in Fort Lauderdale.
